Matariki and Puanga

Matariki and Puanga celebrate the Māori New Year.

To some iwi Puanga is visible before Matariki signalling the time for celebrations.

WALHT:

  • Say a whakataukī related to Matariki
  • Say a short karakia related to Matariki
  • Count to 9 in te reo
  • Answer the question “E hia ngā whetū o Matariki?” with “E iwa ngā whetū” (Nine stars)
  • Answer the question “Ko wai ahau?” “Who am I?”
  • Answer the question “He aha tēnei?” “What is this?” with the sentence starter “He…”.
  • The PowerPoint is a collection of information on each of the nine whetū.
